National Cycling Centre Turns 30

On Wednesday 9 October, we celebrated 30 years of the National Cycling Centre along with some distinguished guests, key individuals and organisations that have helped to shape this building, as well as recognising a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Mancunians in our year as European Capital of Cycling.

Our Executive Member, Cllr John Hacking and the Lord Mayor of Manchester marked the occasion of celebrating the Centre’s 3 decades as an ever-present, iconic silhouette on east Manchester’s skyline and the nucleus that helped shape the destiny of the local community and Manchester’s wider sporting landscape.

We were fortunate to also be joined by British Cycling riders and Olympic and Paralympic medalists Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell and Fin Graham who contributed to the Q&A panel to provide some wonderful insight and stories of being an elite rider and the role the Centre plays.

Since its opening in 1994 by Princess Anne, athletes who train at the centre have achieved 750 medals (nearly half of which gold) across World Championships, Olympics and Paralympic Games.

The centre has also played host to events outside of cycling, including boxing, futsal, netball alongside music events such as Kraftwerk’s famous appearance.

We’re confident the centre will continue to serve as a beacon of excellence and inclusion, supporting Manchester’s ambitions to create a city where our communities are enabled and encouraged to prioritise health, lead active lifestyles and thrive.
