Max Trax Cycle Hub Agrees Funding to Transform Openshaw’s Cycling Community in Memory of Max
Manchester Active and Manchester City Council are delighted to announce that the proposed Max Trax cycle hub at Delamere Park has secured full Capital Budget approval from Manchester City Council, with development of the site now underway.
Max Trax is an exciting community led project, established to raise funding to build community cycling facilities in the heart of Openshaw within Delamere Park, as lasting memorial for Max Rimmer-Chambers who tragically passed away at the age of four.
Max was a special little boy adored by his family and friends, he loved nothing more than riding bikes, scooters and anything on wheels around Delamere Park beside his house.
With the love and support of family, neighbours and the community, the idea of a community-led cycle track began. For the last four years, Max Trax, along with support from partner organisations Step Up MCR, Manchester City Council and Manchester Active, have been working to develop a plan to create the cycle track.
Designed in collaboration with the local community, plans include a new pump track, learn to ride areas with sports lighting, and associated maintenance and education cabins to deliver training and education activities on site.
Mother of son Max, and founder of Max Trax Kerrie Rimmer was a finalist at the Manchester Sports Awards 2024 Community Project of the Year Award. Kerrie discussed the project and the recent funding agreement, click the video link to watch.
In the year Manchester was named European Capital of Cycling for 2024, the new recreational cycling hub within the park will offer opportunities for local people to access and enjoy recreational cycling, healthy recreation and connect people to education and skills.
Max Trax has already raised an incredible amount of money through various fundraising events, a Crowdfunding campaign and external grants. There was also a successful application to British Cycling’s Places to Ride Fund, an event legacy programme set out to address inequalities in participation and create new opportunities for under-represented groups in cycling.
We are now delighted to confirm that in addition to the amount Max Trax have raised through their fundraising, Manchester City Council has recently approved £166k of capital funding to support the project to raise the final amount they need, meaning Max Trax can proceed with their plans.
Cllr Lee Ann Igbon, Executive Member for Vibrant Neighbourhoods
“Delamere Park sits at the heart of the Openshaw community, and the new Max Trax cycle hub will be a wonderful addition to this vibrant neighbourhood.
This project demonstrates the strength of community spirit and the love shared for Max, whose memory continues to inspire such meaningful change. By creating a safe, inclusive, and inspiring space for cycling and recreation, we are not only honouring Max’s passion for cycling but also providing lasting opportunities for residents to enjoy healthy, active lifestyles.
Manchester City Council is proud to support Max Trax with this funding, and we look forward to seeing the hub inspire a love of cycling in Openshaw for years to come.”
Cllr John Hacking – Executive Member for Skills, Employment and Leisure
“Max Trax is a wonderful example of how a community can come together to create something truly meaningful, while honouring the memory of Max and creating a lasting legacy that will bring joy to the local community for generations.
Manchester City Council is proud to contribute this funding to help bring this vision to life, transforming Delamere Park into a hub for cycling, connection, and opportunity for people of all ages and abilities.”
Nicole Hope – Programme Manager, Step Up MCR
“It’s a real “pinch-me” moment seeing five years of hard work pay off for Max’s family and the whole Openshaw community. Step Up MCR has worked with Kerrie since 2019 to catalyse Max Trax from a brilliant idea into a sustainable community organisation.
At times it’s felt insurmountable raising so much money and building a movement from the ground up, but this true show of community power demonstrates that anything is possible with strength in numbers- and that’s just what place-based giving is all about.
Thank you to all the residents, businesses and partners who have been part of this journey. We can’t wait to see you at the track in 2025!”
