European Capital of Cycling Newsletter – May 2024

Fun in the Sun at Cycle Fest 2024

On Sunday 12 May, hundreds attended the first Cycle Fest at Station South in Levenshulme on a gloriously sunny day.

A number of led rides took place in the morning with the Station South Cycle Club. A social spin attracted families with a relay ride from Station South to Debdale Park and back. Other rides took in the canal network with a break at the National Cycling Centre for a quick refreshment and tour of the building.

The festival had a busy afternoon with various family-friendly activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating, bike maintenance, BBQ, with smoothies and music both pedal powered by cycling on a bike! The garden was busy with plant pot decorating and the local Men’s Shed group were selling recycled children’s and adults bikes.

Clean & Green at the Bowl

On 18 May Clean and Green Castlefield and Manchester City Council brought partners together to celebrate cycling, encourage all forms of Active travel and celebrate Manchester’s accolade as European Capital of Cycling 2024.

The sun shone over Castlefield Bowl as the (pedal powered!) music filled the air and attendees were encouraged to get on the saddle!

Over the day, Bee Pedal Ready fixed up over 20 bikes, Transport for Greater Manchester issued over 100 active travel goodie bags and the local police unit applied 20 security tags to bikes to help deter thieves.
