European Capital of Cycling Newsletter – July 2024
Manchester Pedals for Paris
On 16 July, Manchester had a great day celebrating the #PedalForParis and Manchester signing the Sport England #GoingForGreen pledge with athletes & community champions alike.
As the European Capital of Cycling, our world famous medal factory at the National Cycling Centre proved to be the perfect backdrop of the start of the journey to Paris.
Schoolkids waved off Chris Boardman, Katie Archibald and others as they set off on their mammoth ride to Paris, and they especially loved receiving their European Capital of Cycling goody bags.
The ride was also accompanied in part by GM Bicycle Mayor Belinda Everett, and members from Station South, Moston Cycling Club, Cycling UK, Manchester Active and Manchester City Council Staff on a shorter ride.
Manchester Bike Kitchen also joined, and were interviewed about their recent recycling and upcycling of bikes, putting them back into the community, following the opening of their new hub in Wythenshawe Civic Centre.

Manchester Teenage Market
Dr Bike was incorporated into the July Teenage Market event, delivered by the Winning Hearts and Minds team at the Cutting Room Square in Ancoats.
The Teenage Market gives young people a free platform to showcase their creative talents either as trader’s or performers, inviting the local community to come and see the fabulous young people in their communities.
Marina from Moston Cycling Club fixed 7 bikes throughout the day with the offer proving very popular despite the rain.

Love Parks Week 2024
July marked the start of Love Parks Week 2024.
Parks are vital to a healthy, active community and we think they’re worth celebrating.
Love Parks Week celebrates our city’s green spaces and their vital role in boosting the health and wellbeing of people living in Manchester.
Whether it’s enabling cycling routes or cycling events for us to celebrate the year Manchester was deemed European Capital of Cycling, providing a space to break free from the bustle of city life, or somewhere to play with friends, we love and need our parks.

Manchester Day: A City-Sized Playground
Over 400 children took part in a Pedal Party outside Central Library as part of Manchester Day on the 27 July.
2024 is certainly a summer of sport ahead of the Olympics Games in Paris, and to the theme of this year’s Manchester Day was ‘Let the Games’ begin.
The city centre turned into Manchester’s biggest-ever playground, with a day of free family-friendly fun featuring pop-up performances, astounding acrobatics and have-a-go activities to the streets.
British Cycling and Access Sport coaches delivered balance bike and skills sessions for young people, assisted by volunteers. Participants were signposted to Pedal Parties taking place in Alexandra and Wythenshawe parks on a monthly basis.
