Made in Manchester
The Great Britain Cycling Team, who all train at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, won a total of 17 cycling medals at the Paris Olympic Games in a sensational week of on track action.
The team picked up gold in the women’s Team Sprint, with Emma Finucane picking up a further two bronze medals in the Keirin and Individual Sprint.
Despite Katie Archibald being unable to compete because of injury, a young women’s team pursuit team secured a bronze medal. The men’s team pursuit went one better to claim silver.
Off the track, Keiran Reilly won Freestyle BMX silver, Tom Pidcock claimed a brilliant gold in the Mountain Biking and Anna Henderson got a strong silver in the women’s Road TT.
Off the back of Olympic success, British Cycling have launched their next Talent ID sessions, including one in Manchester.
All of these medals were ‘Made in Manchester’, proving undoubtedly why we are a city like no other. #PedalMoreIn24
Cooking Up Gold in the Bike Kitchen
Following their sensational world record breaking Gold medal performance, Katy Marchant and Sophie Capewell, alongside fellow two-wheeled Olympic medalists Beth Shriever and Josie Knight, have returned from Paris to Manchester where they train at the National Cycling Centre.
They’ve teamed up with Manchester Bike Kitchen, a fantastic non-profit community organisation in Hyde that promotes cycling as a way to boost both physical and mental health.
Manchester Bike Kitchen has just launched a new bike hub at Wythenshawe Civic Centre, offering bike repairs, a bike library, maintenance sessions, volunteering opportunities, and even an employment support program. They also have affordable bikes for sale and welcome donations.
Don’t miss their weekly ‘Tea and Tinker’ sessions every Tuesday, 10am-4pm at Wythenshawe Town Centre Civic, where older people can drop in and learn more.

Brand new Bike Kitchen launches in Wythenshawe
Hot off their meet with the GB cyclists, Manchester Bike Kitchen also officially opened its Wythenshawe Town Centre pop up shop with MP Mike Kane doing the honours alongside partners from Cycling UK, Manchester Active, British Cycling, Bee Network and Manchester City Council.
The new shops adds to their other Bike Kitchen shops in Hyde and Stretford.
Their new Wythenshawe hub is open every Tuesday 10-4pm for repairs, bike servicing, advice, preloved bikes, training courses and Tea and Tinker.
Pop in to meet the team at Wythenshawe Civic Centre (Formerly Thomas Cook unit), M22 5RG.
This latest Bike Kitchen store, located in the heart of Wythenshawe will be a vital asset in helping the local community #PedalMoreIn24

Even More ‘Made in Manchester’
Paris played host to yet more athletes as Paralympic athletes rolled into town on 28 August.
And they picked up right where Olympians left off with the Great Britain Para Cycling Team, also based at the National Cycling Centre, achieving a total of three golds, two silvers and a bronze medal on the first few days of track cycling in Paris.
Medalists included Jody Cundy, appearing at his eighth Paralympic Games and James Ball who presented at Manchester Sports Awards in 2023.
With gold medals in the mixed team sprint, women’s individual pursuit and men’s 1km time trial, all eyes go to the road where Sarah Storey is set to compete in her 9th Paralympic Games.
Active Streets!
Manchester has had a fantastic Active Streets campaign this summer.
Active Streets are organised by Manchester Active and Manchester City Council. The events involve a road closure in a selected community and the street’s residents get together and take part in a variety of activities.
Five community providers delivered Dr Bike maintenance sessions at all 17 events we delivered over the summer holiday, proving to be an extremely popular addition to the street activity offer. In total, our partners helped maintain 215 bikes (165 Children’s bikes and 50 Adults’ bikes).
One resident said “You have given me the confidence to start to learn how to fix, we can’t afford to get our bikes fixed, so it’s great that you are here”.

West Fest Comes to Town
West Fest Community Fun Day took place in Burnage in August.
The event was was organised by Manchester City Council South Neighbourhood Team and Westcroft Community Centre working with Manchester Active and Southway Housing Trust.
Suez (Waste Solutions) donated 3 children’s bikes to the event and the Westcroft Community Centre donated an adult’s bike.
Event attendees applied for bikes and the winners will be announced very soon with bikes gifted where there is deemed most need.
The event also raised awareness of active and sustainable modes of travel and carbon reduction. Around 250 people from the local community attended.
