TOUR OF BRITAIN WOMEN

On Sunday 9 June, I was delighted to be invited as GM Bicycle Mayor to Stage Four, the final stage, of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Women 2024.

It was great to join other community cycling champions, alongside such fantastic female cycling athletes to celebrate Manchester’s position as a leading cycling city and women in cycling overall.

I attended alongside friends from Bee Pedal Ready, British Cycling, Ice Trikes, and many more at the Activation Zone at the National Cycling Centre. What a fantastic atmosphere it was! With Lotte Kopecky becoming the overall winner in a thrilling final stint in Leigh.

Just a few days prior,  I was also part of a team of incredible, talented, female mechanics at Sisters in the Wild UK teaching bike maintenance, at there annual cycling festival, in the beautiful surroundings of the Lake District.

From grassroots to elite, there needs to be much more investment and development into women’s elite and community cycling. The numbers are growing in participation and watching of the sport. It’s exciting to see what this could look like in years to come.

Finally I’d like to say a big congratulations to Lotte Kopecky on her brilliant win.

A MAYORAL VISIT

In June I made the journey up to Glasgow, having been invited to meet Shgufta Anwar, Founder of Women on Wheels and the Bicycle Mayor of Glasgow, to be a part of there annual Cycling Festival for Women and Families.

What an incredible day it was! I witnessed so many children on bikes, and a real strong community spirit. I even met the inspiring Annela Mckeena pushing boundaries and diversity in the MTB industry.

The day was also an opportunity for me to share the brilliant work from community organisations in Greater Manchester to create change in the cycling industry of the area.

The team were immense, such beautiful people, having a significant impact in there area, culture and community, all through Cycling.

Bee Pedal Ready and Women on Wheels are creating a much needed change within the cycling industry. Thank you so much Glasgow, Scotland, and the incredible Women on Wheels, and Shgufta Anwar for making me feel so welcome.

PEDAL FOR PARIS

On Tuesday 16 July I was invited as GM Bicycle Mayor to attend the start of Chris Boardman and Sport England’s #PedalForParis.

The day was  fantastic send-off to Chris Boardman on the start of his eight day bike ride from Manchester to Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Pedal for Paris aims to highlight inspirational and innovative people and projects that are working to put the environment first and to take urgent action to tackle climate change.

Being there as GM Bicycle Mayor was amazing, and provided me with the opportunity to meet some truly inspirational women in sport, including elite racing cyclist Katie Archibald and a true hero of mine in Diane Modahl, four time Olympian and Commonwealth gold medallist in the 800m.  It was an honour to meet these incredible women who have pushed boundaries in sport.

I was also delighted to support Manchester in signing the #GoingForGreen Pledge to help drive climate change action across the city, and create a much needed sustainable and community led change.

CLEAN AIR DAY 2024

What an amazing summer it has been so far for culture, bikes and clean air!

In July, Bee Pedal Ready collaborated with TfGM , Recycle For Greater Manchester and Manchester Active to celebrate at St Margarets primary school, Cycling and Culture Day!

The day featured lots of music, dance, and food from all over the world, and proved to be a wonderful day celebrating the beautiful diversity of Manchester.

Also, together with Let’s Talk Clean Air, Whalley Range, we raised awareness of the pollution that surrounds our local school and how it affects our children.

WE INVENTED THE WEEKEND

On 15-16 June Bee Pedal Ready attended amazing We Invented The Weekend Festival.

Bee Pedal Ready fixed many bikes and led bike rides around Salford. Surrounded by music, activities, boat rides, dance, and much more. What a beautiful, sunny, and colourful day it was!

I was honoured to be invited to join the panel with Herman, the founder of Made Running. I also met Patrick Grant of The Great British Sewing.

BIKES SPEAK ALL LANGUAGES

Language should never be a barrier to activity.

With a translator, Bee Pedal Ready and the Chinese Health Information Centre rode together along the canals and urban green city, learning bike mechanics too.

In what was an amazing day, we visited beautiful natural places right on our communities doorstep.

If you haven’t been to Clayton Vale, check it out. If you work with your community and would be interested in a session with a translator, get in contact!

Don’t forget, the bicycle speaks all languages!

EID CYCLE FEST 2024

On Sunday 23 June, I joined Cycling UK, alongside Cycling Instructor and Bike Mechanic Naz Khan, at an Eid Community Cycling event in Heaton Park.

The sun was shining on a fantastic day celebrating the multicultural community and the 10 year anniversary of Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival programme, which has helped fund many Manchester groups to deliver entry-level cycling opportunities in Manchester communities.

Bee Pedal Ready joined the day and we delivered Dr Bike sessions to nearly 30 bikes!

I would like to thank the organisers and the brilliant young (and older!) volunteers from the local area on what was a wonderful day in North Manchester.
