European Capital of Cycling Newsletter – October 2024

Lord Mayor of Manchester speaking at the National Cycling Centre's 30th Anniversary event

National Cycling Centre Turns 30

On Wednesday 9 October, we celebrated 30 years of the National Cycling Centre along with some distinguished guests, key individuals and organisations that have helped to shape this building, as well as recognising a legacy that continues to inspire generations of Mancunians in our year as European Capital of Cycling.

Alongside our Executive Member, Cllr John Hacking and the Lord Mayor of Manchester, we were fortunate to also be joined by British Cycling riders and Olympic and Paralympic medalists Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell and Fin Graham who contributed to the Q&A panel to provide some wonderful insight and stories of being an elite rider and the role the Centre plays.

Since its opening in 1994 by Princess Anne, athletes who train at the centre have achieved 750 medals (nearly half of which gold) across World Championships, Olympics and Paralympic Games.

For issue 3, Bee visited Amsterdam to meet the city’s very own Bicycle Mayor, featured in MMU’s ‘Aah’ Magazine, shared stories of inspirational black cyclists for #BlackHistoryMonth and looked forward to November’s Light’s Up Event.

So, buckle up (or clip in!), and get ready for a journey into the world of cycling with Bee! Check it out via the link below.

Alexandra Park Pedal Party

The Pedal Parties in Alexandra Park continue to grow.

The team is now welcoming regular riders who have been spreading details the events by word of mouth. The regular nature of the events regularlyt is still one of the best methods of engaging and getting people riding.

For the Pedal Party on 12 October, thanks to bikes provided by British Cycling, the team we’re able focus on adults, as opposed to children and balance bikes as is the norm.

Asa result, Pedal Party has been successful in inviting existing riders at Alexandra Park to join the Muslim Women’s Group on Mondays at the National Cycling Centre.

October Half Term

Over October Half Term, nearly 100 people attended the cycling events at Heaton Park with 44 children starting to pedal, with the youngest being just 2 years old on the balance bikes!

During the same period, we worked with our partners to deliver Active Street sessions to residents on their doorsteps. It was a busy few days day with 15 bikes being looked at and repaired.

Better yet, a resident kindly donated a bike his son had grown out of, alongside 3 more bikes recovered out of a nearby skip. Amazingly 3 out of 4 bikes have now been fixed and are back in use!

These bikes have now been donated to two local families – one family has two children, an SEN child and the another child who learnt how to ride thanks to this programme.

The Active Streets Teams have been hard at work to remove the culture of throwing old bikes away, and is discussing ways to encourage the community to embrace a ‘fix it’ approach.

7 Decades of Cycling

Ken Foster’s Cycles, a mainstay in the Chorlton community, turned 70 in October.

Foster’s opened in 1954, Winston Churchill served as prime minister, and ever since store has stood the test of time. Foster’s remains as popular as ever despite the ever-changing challenges it has faced over the past 7 decades.

To celebrate its 70th birthday, Foster’s organised a community bike ride on the Fallowfield loop, providing customers old and new with the chance to celebrate the store that has helped generations of people get into cycling.

The event also featured an exhibit displaying bicycles and mopeds from the 60s, 70s and 80s as an homage to their past.

Thanks to Foster’s, Chorlton remains a thriving hub for cycling. We’re sure the store will continue to pedal a path way into the future.
